During a working meeting between Ukrainian specialists and their colleagues from the Saxony State Forest Service (Sachsenforst), the German foresters expressed an interest in importing seeds of certain tree species from Ukraine.
“At present, Germany purchases fir seeds from Romania; however, our German colleagues have certain reservations regarding the quantity and quality of these purchases. They have therefore expressed interest in potential cooperation regarding the purchase of silver fir seeds, of which the Carpathian region of Ukraine is rich,” explained Mariana Ostrovska, Head of the Sector for International Relations, Science and Public Relations at the State Forest Resources Agency.
The German foresters spoke about the legislative and administrative regulations concerning forest reproductive material, and also familiarised their Ukrainian colleagues with the ownership structure of Saxony’s forests, forest inventory processes and the specifics of forest management.
It should be noted that, at the invitation of the management of the consortium of the German project to support the integration of the forestry sector (SFI), a delegation of Ukrainian specialists exchanged experiences in the field of forest management and readiness to comply with the requirements of the EUDR regulation with their German colleagues. The current phase of the SFI project is aimed at building capacity in the areas of forest policy, management and sustainable forestry, drawing on European and German experience and integrating this into the broader context of Ukraine’s EU accession process.
