On 20-21 March, a workshop was held in Lviv to bring together experts, government officials and forestry stakeholders to discuss the harmonisation of terminology, definitions and legal concepts in Ukrainian legislation, as well as key changes needed to align the regulatory framework with EU requirements. Particular attention was paid to the European Green Deal and its significance for Ukraine’s forestry sector.
‘Adapting forestry legislation is a difficult but necessary step on Ukraine’s path to European integration,’ said Hanna Antoniuk, FAO Project Manager, ’It will also strengthen cooperation in preventing deforestation and forest degradation, conserve biodiversity and strengthen climate change mitigation measures, and support the country’s long-term environmental and economic stability.
The workshop was organised as part of a joint FAO-EU project to support the competitiveness and sustainable development of Ukraine’s forestry sector.
